What counts as cocktail dressing
Cocktail sits between smart and formal. Floor length is usually too much; anything casual is too little. A sculpted midi, a short structured dress or a sharply tailored co-ord all land correctly. In Indian city settings the dress code skews slightly dressier than Western cocktail, so a satin finish or a subtle embellishment is safer than something entirely plain.
Choosing colour and finish
Deep jewel tones, wine, midnight and black photograph best under indoor light. Metallics read festive without being costume. If the event is a wedding function, avoid ivory and pale gold. A matte fabric with a sculpted seam looks more expensive than a shiny fabric with none, so when in doubt choose the better cut.
Finishing the look
One focal point: either the neckline or the earring. A heel you can stand in for three hours. A clutch small enough to hold under an arm. If the dress has a strong shoulder or an embellished bodice, leave the neck bare entirely — that is the single easiest way to make an outfit look edited rather than assembled.
