Dressing as a wedding guest
Three rules carry you through most Indian wedding functions. Avoid ivory, white and pale gold — those belong to the bride. Choose a jewel tone, wine, midnight or a controlled metallic instead. And dress to the function: a mehendi or a daytime ceremony wants a lighter midi, while a reception wants floor length or a heavily finished midi. If you are travelling to a destination wedding, choose crease-resistant crepe over organza.
Structure that lasts the night
Celebration dressing is a physical event: hours on your feet, several hundred photographs, one long dinner. Our bodices are lightly boned so they stay put without being re-adjusted, skirts hang from an internal waistband that takes weight off the zip, and closures are hand-finished so they do not gape. Hems are cut with heels in mind — try the piece on in the shoes you will wear.
Jewellery and proportion
With family jewellery, let the garment recede: a clean neckline, a plain bodice, a strong colour. With an embellished piece, wear almost nothing — an ear stud and a ring. The most common mistake at celebrations is layering heirloom jewellery over an already-decorated bodice, which flattens both.
